BUFFER+: Restoring Peatlands for Climate Resilience, Biodiversity, and Sustainable Innovation

Narrative :

Peatland, a Nature Based Solution to help restoring the water cycle and biodiversity.
BUFFER+ is an InterregNWE project, focussing on realization, on research build-up and sharing of  knowledge for peatland restoration. By restoring the capacity to buffer carbon and water, provide ecosystems to improve biodiversity, the project aims at climate change adaptation and mitigation in NWE regions, while at the same time contributing to restore biodiversity and create new revenue streams.

Interreg BUFFER+ involves 21 partners and 7 associated organizations from 5 countries: Germany, Ireland, France, Belgium and the Netherlands. Together the partnership represents all types of peatlands in north-west Europe; from low peat bogs, boggy soils and peat meadows to wet grasslands and raised bogs. Knowledge organizations, site managers, companies, network organizations and governments combine their capabilities and expertise and build on the results of previous projects.

Our touch :

HAEDES will be developing and understanding a digital twinning model to improve decision-making process in peatland restoration processes. We will apply machine learning techniques for the understanding of physical processes and develop a system linking eco- and agro-functions.
In addition, HAEDES will support partners in systematically collecting data before and after applying their measurements and to develop a data platform for full data access. We will apply this in detail to the pilot Romboutswerve in Flanders and to the Westerkwartier pilot in the Netherlands.
