I3-4-SEAWEED LAUNCHES A EUR 1.8M OPEN CALL FOR MACROALGAE INNOVATION PROJECTS

20 August 2025The I3-4-SEAWEED project is officially launching its Open Call for SMEs’ projects in Macroalgal Production and Algal Biotechnology & Downstream Applications. A total of EUR 1 800 000.00 will be distributed to up to 30 projects, with a maximum lump sum of EUR 60 000.00 per selected project.

Applications are now open to SMEs with innovative solutions at a minimal TRL 6 from eligible regions, including areas in Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Greece, Spain, France, Croatia, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Latvia, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, and Slovakia. For the precise list of eligible regions with regional codes, please refer to the project webpage. The call closes on 22 October 2025 at 17:00 Brussels time.

Applicants may apply under one of two strands: Strand A – Macroalgal Production and Strand B – Macroalgal Biotechnology and Downstream Applications. These strands are designed to address sectoral challenges and strengthen the macroalgal value chain by supporting product and process testing, optimisation, and the development of innovative processing technologies. Priority focus areas include hatchery innovations, seaweed-based meat alternatives, cosmetic applications, biofertilisers and biostimulants, seaweed-based food products, and integrating digital twin technologies for offshore aquaculture.

In addition to funding, selected teams will receive training, mentorship, access to online webinars, and networking opportunities, including participation in an event organized by the I3-4-SEAWEED consortium where they will pitch their innovations.
