Weerbare Westhoek / Resilient Westhoek

Narrative :

After the severe floods in the Westhoek, a region in the West of Flanders (Belgium) in November 2023, the Flemish Government set up the ‘Resilient Westhoek’ Taskforce, focused on sustainable water management to improve flood risk management. The region has different goals and challenges, such as housing, nature, agriculture and recreation. Elements whose ambitions are all interrelated and therefore cannot be separated. This is precisely why an integral and systemic approach is needed.

Our touch :

In close cooperation with the basin secretariat, HAEDES works on the necessary building blocks to achieve a supported, integrated and action-oriented multi-year programme for a Resilient Westhoek. More specific we:

  • Carry out a fine-scale inventory exercise of the region, including needs, short and long term initiatives,
  • Map water needs and solutions,
  • build a thorough and substantiated picture of potential linkage opportunities,
  • We enhance and strengthen the development of new and existing relationships, refining the area knowledge and creating and optimising mutual trust and support for different measurements – resulting in a solid long term systemic approach for the region.
